NOTES:

Chicago winters are bone-numbing, but Joe Daley still cuts the sleeves off of his sweaters. Who knows why? He’s the drummer; they’re always the strange ones.

The rehearsal space is strewn with old, mismatched Christmas lights. The elevator doesn’t work, but at least the heater does. Then there’s JB with his glad-hand and Fender Jazz Bass. He lays the foundation, sort of like a cross between Carol Kaye and Paul McCartney. Where do those notes come from?

All of the members grew up in different parts of Indiana and are used to trees, snow and straight, flat roads. The mammoth record collection belongs to Finn Swingley. There’s at least one worthwhile song on every LP, he claims. He’s good with songwriting, harmonies and rubbery lead guitar parts. Lake Shore Drive has a weird sort of beauty to it. Nobody drives the speed limit. Paul takes it south to get to practice. He wrangles all kinds of weird noises out of those effects pedals. You’re dealing with nocturnal fuzzmongers, unabashed nostalgics here.

The songs are grand in scope, powerful, ragged and sweet. Turn on your stereo.
